Different version of the story.

This is CFTBL in name only. I couldn't wait to read it knowing the creature was going to be bigger than it was in the film.What I didn't know was how different an appearance it would have. A parrot shaped head, pink skin, dark tail tiny arms and two sets of reproduction organs. My minds eye had a hard time visualizing the ridiculous thing. I don't know why the author went out of his way to completely alter the main character of the story but he did. The weird thing is that the author dedicates about 4 pages at the beginning of the book praising the original film and the iconic figure if the gillman. Read this if you want a very different version of the story.

Carl Dreadstone's Version, Not Universal's

This novelization of the classic monster movie from Universal Studios isn't so much an adaptation of the original story as a total re-imagining of it. That wouldn't be so bad if the novel didn't try so hard to come across as a more literal rendition of the source material. The book contains several black and white stills from the film, but this is pointless since nothing and no one in the book is described as looking much like they do in the movie. The eponymous Creature, or Gillman, is much bigger in this book than his more human-like movie counterpart, and Kay, the beautiful girl who steals the Gillman's monstrous heart, not only looks quite unlike Julia Adams (the lovely brunette pictured on the cover, who in the novel inexplicably becomes a blonde) but doesn't have the same personality or expertise that she does in the film, either. Overall, Dreadstone's adaptation only has superficial similarities to the movie his book is based upon, and greatly augments any socio-political subtexts which may be present in the film. This is unnecessarily distracting, and while the original Gillman is a somewhat sympathetic monster he remains a dangerous predator that had to be defeated, particularly for the safety of Kay. The climax of the novel aims to one-up the novel and is admittedly spectacular thanks to the presence of a torpedo boat, but everything is undone but the writer's ambivalent handling of the Creature and his relationship to Kay. Some may be interested to note that Carl Dreadstone is a pseudonym for Ramsay Campbell, a very popular horror writer, but in reality the writer's name doesn't matter. It's still a dreadfully disappointing book that doesn't live up to the original film at all.
