About the Author
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Elizabeth is the middle of three sisters.

The Knox family moved around a number of times during Elizabeth s childhood. They lived in Pomare, Wadestown, Waikanae, and Paremata. The sisters were close, and always played imaginary games. By the time Elizabeth was eleven, the games had become one game, an ongoing saga set in another world -- a game she shared with her sisters and several friends. One day, when Elizabeth was sixteen, her father interrupted a discussion the girls were having about the possible results of a secret treaty and said, I hope you re writing some of this down. The idea hadn t occurred to Elizabeth before, and she thought it was a very good one. She, her sisters, and friends began writing letters between their characters and stories about them. Elizabeth enjoyed writing and decided that this -- writing fiction -- was what she wanted to do with her life.

When Elizabeth left her secondary school, Tawa College, which she attended from 1972 to 1976, she took a job as a clerk in the Inland Revenue department in Porirua. While workmates her age were saving for cars, weddings, and overseas travel, Elizabeth saved in order to take eight months off work and write a novel. This first novel, "One Too Many Lives", completed when she was nineteen, was not to be published (though there was kind interest from a number of publishers in New Zealand and the UK). Again Elizabeth went back to work to save money, and at twenty-two took another year off and wrote another novel, "Salamander", which she disliked and put away.

In 1983, Elizabeth went to Victoria University and began a degree in English literature. In 1984 she took Bill Manhire s Original Composition course and began writing "After Z-Hour". Bill Manhire encouraged her to finish it (actually, he told her he d rather see her finish her novel than her degree). "After Z-Hour" was published by Victoria University Press in 1987. The same year, Elizabeth graduated from Victoria University with a B.A. in English literature and was awarded the ICI Young Writers Bursary (now the Louis Johnson Bursary).

Elizabeth Knox has been a full-time writer since 1997. She has published eight novels and three autobiographical novellas. Her best-known book is "The Vintner s Luck", which won the Deutz Medal for fiction in the 1999 Montana New Zealand Book Awards and the 2001 Tasmania Pacific Region Prize. "The Vintner s Luck" has been published in seven languages and is being made into a film by Niki Caro ("Whale Rider; North Country"). Elizabeth s most recent book, "Daylight", was short-listed for Best Book in the South Pacific & South East Asian Region of the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize. Elizabeth s first book for young adults, "Dreamhunter: Book One of the Dreamhunter Duet", was chosen as a White Raven by the International Youth Library, and is the winner of New Zealand s prestigious Esther Glen Medal. Its sequel, "Dreamquake", will be published in March 2007.

Elizabeth lives in Wellington with her husband, Fergus Barrowman, and their son, Jack.

The Angel's Cut, a captivating sequel

The Angel's Cut is Elizabeth Knox's sequel to her novel, The Vintner's Luck. Zas, the de-winged angel from the Vintner's luck, has outlived his former lover, Jobran, and the new novel finds him in a new century involved in early flight, on a German Zeppelin during WWI on a bombing raid heading to England. The novel follows Zas' life journey as he yearns for his former contact with the angelic aerial world by becoming a stunt pilot and getting involved in the early Hollywood movie community in the 1920's. He rooms with a sought after female screen writer, has an affair with one of Hollywood's most successful but deeply troubled directors who also builds advanced design airplanes during the 1920's. Zas' peculiar and alien character perplexes people. He hides his alien nature by keeping his scars of his wing-ectomy hidden, and his journey as an immortal among mortals is fascinating and didactic. Knox's writing is touching, moving, and insightful with a clear and efficient use of the language. The emotions and anguish are clearly communicated of the turmoil experienced by Zas and the other characters in this story as well as a look inside the Hollywood of the 1920's that hits home as very real and immediate. You will not be disappointed but I suggest you read The Vintner's Luck first.

Not a patch on the original, sadly.

The Vinter's Luck is one of my favourite novels of all time: gorgeous, dark, scandalous, salacious, intoxicating and heretical. This one just never gets me interested, never draws me in, never makes me care...it never gets off the ground.

The device of structuring the novel around winemaking terms worked so much better than structuring it around movies; I don't really know why. Easily the best bit is the epilogue, but apart from that this one is just lumpen.

If you read and loved The Vintner's Luck then you are going to read this obviously...but you probably won't enjoy it as much. Sorry.

Magnificent intro to viruses!

For decades I've been waiting for the perfect intro to viruses and now it's here! Several authors and publishers have attempted this on the introductory/undergrad level, but no one has ever really succeeded.
Harper's strengths: clear nontechnical language, concise and compact format, beautifully illustrated, appealing layout, current facts, study questions, internet sources, Appendix I: replication cycles/strategies of major virus families, perfect for reference and visual learning! Appendix II: viral drugs in tabular form including names, target, mode of action, formulas - a combined textbook and reference.

All in all, an excellent didactical approach - great job by author and publisher! TCH Cole, Heidelberg

Not very detailed at all. I am VERY surprised ...

Not very detailed at all. I am VERY surprised this book is being used in a graduate course. Personally, I couldn't see this being used in any biology (major) undergraduate course either. I've seen more detail of viruses in terms of replication and virulence in molecular biology books than what I've seen in this.

Definitive treatment of clinical prediction

More than half a century after its original publication in 1954, this remains the most important scholarly work on this subject. As Meehl noted in this monograph and elsewhere, he most emphatically was not comparing different ways of gathering information (e.g., tests vs. interviews). Rather, he was comparing different ways of integrating whatever information has been gathered to make the most valid predictions possible, and thereby to use the most ethically defensible decision-making procedure. One could gather the information through tests (standardized, projective, etc.), interviews (structured, unstructured, or semi-structured), archival records (school, medical, criminal, etc.), informants (family, coworkers, etc.), and a number of other ways.

Meehl's analysis dealt with how all of this information is combined. Should we do it in our heads, or should we use a mechanical decision aid, such as an equation or an actuarial table? He presented a sophisticated analysis of the task and considered conditions that might favor each approach. In one chapter, he reviewed the available empirical data, but this is not the focal point of this monograph.

An article by Grove and Meehl (1996) provides an excellent treatment of objections to mechanical decision aids, with persuasive rebuttals for each, and a meta-analysis by Grove et al (2000) provide a quantitative review of the empirical literature on the subject, including 136 studies that met fairly strict inclusion criteria (in contrast to the 20 studies that were available to Meehl for review in 1954).

Meehl's original conclusion that mechanical decision aids achieve validity rates equal or superior to those of experts exercising their unaided judgment has stood the test of time and is now supported by such a large and diverse array of studies that an impartial reader can reasonably conclude that this "controversy" has been settled.

Importance of Meehl's "little book"

This is probably one of the most important books ever written (early 50's), and as a result widely ignored by fields that relied (or rely) upon subjective judgements such as medicine. The last time I read anything about this issue, there had not been one study that contradicted Meehl's basic findings (see for example, work by Hastie and Dawes). Yet, irrational decision making is pervasive. Years ago I went through medical school and a psychiatry residency without one reference to this book. I had to find this on my own, and fortunately did so in the late 70's. This and issues such as construct validity, improper linear models, and at least the idea of Bayesian statistics got me into a lot of trouble with my fellow workers in mental health who made totally irrational clinical decisions seriously harming many people (I worked in public mental health centers for the most part); so ultimately Meehl was responsible for my ending a very frustrating career in public psychiatry. Long story. People always tell me I should write a book. Of all the things I studied for many years, Meehl was the foundation.

An analysis of interviews VS psychological tests

Despite the ago of this book (written around 1954 as an expansion of lectures given in the years 1947-1950, fifth printing (unchanged) in 1963), the points raised by Paul Meehl remain current.
Paul Meehl asks himself the question what "how can we predict how a person is going to behave?". He distinguishes 2 main approaches: clinical interviews VS statistics (psychometric tests) and discusses the pros and cons of both approaches.
For decades psychologists have been struggling between the use of tests (statistics) and (clinical) interviews. I ran into the problem myself when I did a Whiplash study in 1999 and found that many doctors made clear mistakes during the patient's LAB Profile interviews, to such an extend that the produced data was unreliable for further research! Since then, I reluctantly moved over to the testing side and co-developed the iWAM test (see jobEQ.com), but I recommend complementing tests with structured follow up interviews to check the validity of the test answers.
One of his main points pro testing is that "Every hour a clinician spends in thinking and talking about whom to treat, and how and how long, is being subtracted from the available pool of therapeutic time itself." The main counter argument of a clinician will be that every individual is a separate case and thus becomes hard to find in the numbers.
In global, one can say that Meehl holds a quite impartial point of view and tries to present approaches in a factual manner, trying to bring them together. A slight bias towards testing may be expected, given that Paul Meehl was a professor of Psychology and psychiatry at the University of Minnesota and also wrote a book on the clinical use of MMPI.

In this first book-length study of Robert Ryman, Suzanne Hudson traces the artist's production from his first paintings in the early 1950s, many of which have never been exhibited or reproduced, to his recent gallery shows. Ryman's largely white-on-white paintings represent his careful working over of painting's conventions at their most radically reduced. Through close readings of the work, Hudson casts Ryman as a painter for whom painting was conducted as a continuous personal investigation. Ryman's method -- an act of "learning by doing" -- as well as his conception of painting as "used paint" sets him apart from second-generation abstract expressionists, minimalists, or conceptualists.

Ryman (born in 1930) is a self-taught artist who began to paint in earnest while working as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1950s. Hudson argues that Ryman's approach to painting developed from quotidian contact with the story of modern painting as assembled by MoMA director and curator Alfred Barr and rendered widely accessible by director of the education department Victor D'Amico and colleagues. Ryman's introduction to artistic practice within the (white) walls of MoMA, Hudson contends, was shaped by an institutional ethos of experiential learning. (Others who worked at the MoMA during these years include Lucy Lippard, who married Ryman in 1961; Dan Flavin, another guard; and Sol LeWitt, a desk assistant.)

Hudson's chapters -- "Primer," "Paint," "Support," "Edge," and "Wall," named after the most basic elements of the artist's work -- eloquently explore Ryman's ongoing experiment in what makes a painting a painting. Ryman's work, she writes, tests the medium's material and conceptual possibilities. It signals neither the end of painting nor guarantees its continued longevity but keeps the prospect of painting an open question, answerable only through the production of new paintings.

Robert Ryman's white

This book offers a great view of the not-so-often understood white painting of Robert Ryman. It puts his art in relation with another artists, schools and movements, and there's an exhaustive reproduction of almost his entire creations over his long career.

Definitely recommended for any abstract-painting lover and Ryman's admirer. Like me, by the way!

Elegant Book

This is one of the most elegantly written, keenly insightful, and useful books I have ever read on a single artist. It explains in astonishingly clear prose the mesmerizing quality as well as what can sometimes feel like the inexplicability of Robert Ryman's white paintings. Hudson offers a way in to Ryman's work that makes me love his paintings even more than I did before reading this text. She also does an amazing job of explaining American pragmatism.
I've never commented on another review before-- but the comments made by an earlier reviewer who thought the book was just an extended effort to say what others have already said are crazy. Not only is this simply wrong (Hudson's analysis is thoroughly original), but some of the people this reviewer mentions actually wrote their texts on Ryman after Hudson's book.

Art criticism as it should be done

Suzanne Hudson has written a stunning and moving response to Robert Ryman's painting. (When was the last time you heard such adjectives used to describe a work of contemporary art criticism?). She even takes on Rosalind Krauss... and somehow MIT press, the postmodern press of choice, still published it! Unlike so many other critics, Hudson takes as her task the leading of the reader into a more profound and sensitive encounter with Ryman's paintings, rather than attempting merely to snare the reader into awestruck obeisance to the critic's perspicacity. She almost never falls into opaque prose or solipsistic neologisms. Her writing instead tends to clarity, precision, and sensitive insight, which deepen the reader's appreciation for Ryman's courageous undertakings. Like the best of critics of any period, Hudson focuses on the work of art as a material product, which also resonates with particular aesthetic goals and attitudes and with the particular dilemmas of its historical moment-in-time. She provocatively teases these resonances out of a close and careful observation of the specifics of Ryman's facture and never mistakes her interpretations for the artist's production. Reading this book uplifted me and affirmed myriad possibilities for all those of us who are artists and art historians alike. Thank you, Dr. Hudson.

I stumbled across your book in a google search and now I know why I have been asked if I had any published written works! We share the same name, mine by marriage. Your content is exactly what drives my passion these days with a 15 year old son and 11 year old daughter of my own! There can never be too much encouragement for today's parents! This culture in which we are struggling to raise kind, responsible, God-fearing children walking by faith is not what I had expected in this season of my life as a 48 year old parent.
