Kindle version not good!

I downloaded the sample of this book, and the diagrams were very small, and the figurine notation didn't have enough contrast to read easily. I suggest switching to straight algebraic notation and diagrams at least twice as big. If the publisher needs examples, look at Minev's book on Rook Endings, or the 2nd and 3rd versions of Muller's ChessCafe Puzzle books (the 1st version has small diagrams... but they fixed this in book 2 and 3). Chess books on the Kindle need readable diagrams and clear easy to read notation... this book doesn't have it at this time.

I have several books on chess tactics. I bounce back and forth from book to book so I won't get bored with any one book. This book is probably in my top 3 as far as tactics go. Very well worth having in your chess library

Best book on tactics!

Back in the summer of 2007 I worked through the Russian edition of this book (even though I don't read Russian). I was very impressed with the collection of chess problems. Now that it has been translated into English, I'm going to work through the book again. The author works through the whole history of chess to present the best combinations from each period. The chapters are:

About the Author
Donald R. Askeland joined the University of Missouri–Rolla in 1970 after obtaining his doctorate in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Michigan. His primary interest has been in teaching, resulting in a variety of campus, university, and industry awards and the preparation of a materials engineering textbook. Dr. Askeland has also been active in research involving metals casting and metals joining, particularly in the production, treatment, and joining of cast irons, gating and fluidity of aluminum alloys, and optimization of casting processes. Additional work has concentrated on lost foam casting, permanent mold casting, and investment casting; much of this work has been interdisciplinary, providing data for creating computer models and validation of such models.

Pradeep P. Phul� received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and teaches at the University of Pittsburgh. His research is primarily concerned with the synthesis and processing of ceramic powders and thin films, consisting of nano-sized primary particles/grains. His current research involves development of novel synthesis and processing protocols for electro-optic and ferroelectric ceramics and studies related to the relationships between their microstructure and dielectric/optical properties. Dr. Phul� is also researching fundamental of magnetorheological (MR) fluids. He is a Fellow to the American Ceramic Society.

An incomplete volume

This book offers just enough information to cripple a student. Descriptions of lattice structures contained scant information on any structure other than Face-Centered Cubic structures or Base-Centered Cubic structures. The book did not provide adequate reasoning behind the formation of Diamond centered cubic structures, of importance when dealing with ceramic materials. Ambiguous explanation of the Hexagonal close packed structure lead to difficulty understanding what effects stucture causes.

I viewed a previous edition of this textbook, under a different author, and found diagrams showing full crystal structures instead of single unit cells. I should find the diagrams I need for this in my materials book, I do not understand why they were not included.

The examples used seem silly, such as asking the reader what materials should be used on the space shuttle. At the point in the book the questions are asked, one can only assume the reader has no idea unless they watched a space shuttle documentary or read about the subject themselves. They will be able to provide requirements of the materials, but spitting out names at the reader without delving into the why of the materials selection does the reader great harm. The book does not connect neccessary pieces, nor provide a "big picture" view of some important subjects in the text. Emphasis is on memorization, not on true understanding.

When Spellcheck Fails

Enjoy the speling errors and, gramatical misstakes on allmost evry, pages. One would suppose after four editions all such errors would have been annihilated. Maybe the mistakes are meant to maintain the reader's vigilance. Perhaps the typos exist so that one day edition 6 might also.
It is worth noting, for the reader's insight, that in this edition the author(s) employ the use--or perhaps we should say the "overuse"--of the English language to generate many sentences for the purpose of yielding simple concepts to the reader, though certainly a few words would suffice. The book is, in a word, wordy.
Perhaps this is enough to warrant a grade of one star. In the book's defense, however, the pictures are quite nice... when they happen to be accurate. After noticing glaring truth deficiencies in a few graphs and formulas it becomes difficult to simply accept all of the quite nice pictures as definitive law, though they are certainly enjoyable for aesthetic purposes.
To summarize, the book is not recommended for purchasing purposes unless unavoidable. Though the text possesses some merit in its ability to sharpen one's editing skills, that is no reason to spend what textbooks cost.

An awful text book

I just completed a course in materials science using the 4th edition and have been appalled by the poor quality of the book (spiffy cover artwork aside).
The book is full of generalizations that impart no significant understanding of the topics treated. Commonly, the book will simply assert that X causes Y without any physical justification as to WHY. Illustratively, when the book touches upon atomic structure, it uses a figure depicting the Bohr model of the atom without any reference to this being a simplification, nor any reference to the "actual" character of atomic orbitals.
Additionally, the book is rife with poorly worded problems which are accompanied by answers that seeminly have no correspondence to their respective problems. I did not do a single problem set from the book without finding at least one problem where the answer was just plain wrong. A particularly amusing instance was the assignment of units of area to a dimensionless answer (and NO, the quantity wasn't right, either).
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS BOOK.

The Rhevireon, a synthetic armor developed by a private security agency (never told of explicitly throughout the 19 chapters), headed in turn by La Margrave, the rough minded woman leading the Jormungandr submarin into the depths of the Pacific, La Margrave at the service of her employers, the Zentrum bureaucracy, doesn't show bit of a servitude-complex towards the nation she was entitled to shield.
It is Juneauton Weltzentrumpoleis, the city-state under the mercy of the Regnum, the Occidental Regnum, (the Western realm) a theocracy (where a deity is the supreme head of state), not much is known about the Rgnum except that it was founded on the ruins of the short-lived Republic of Alaska, the outcome of divisive ware that ripped aprt a once prosperous State of Alaska, after the latter's secession from money-monger United States, reigned over by a submissive congress, a congress at the service of four industrial-banking dynasties, whose ultimate objective seems to be,the establishing of a New Order of the Worlds on the sanctified land of the far north, the Last Frontier.

The Ascent of the West is a fantastic novel, and definitely worth the read

For a debut novel especially, Maxwell F.J. Kaeser's The Rhevireon Chronicle: The Ascent of the West is a fantastic novel, and definitely worth the read. I loved it, and would love more of the story. This book definitely isn't for everyone, but it's so, so good. Upon picking the book up, I was immediately intrigued by Hoyden, and that just made reading the novel that much more interesting. I highly recommend this novel for anyone who wants something that is a little off-beat, but certainly fresh, new, and innovative.

About the Author

Brian Charlesworth is Royal Society Research Professor at the Institute of Cell, Animal and Population Biology, University of Edinburgh, and President of the Society for the Study Evolution. His research is mainly in evolutionary genetics, applying classical and molecular genetics to the study of evolution and natural variation. He is author of Evolution in Age-Structured Populations (CUP, 2nd edn. 1994) Deborah Charlesworth is Professor in the ICABP at Edinburgh. Her research focuses on the evolution of plant breeding systems, including how they avoid inbreeding, and work on sex chromosomes and self-incompatibility.

An excellent summary of current knowledge

It is a sign of the times that the authors on occasion take a defensive attitude to their subject. Creationism, for whatever reason, has proved remarkably adaptive and, strange as it may seem, evolutionary biologists still feel obliged to painstakingly lay out the evidence for evolution per se, rather than just discuss its mechanisms or trace its history.

The Charlesworths do a good job of this, albeit in a rather dry, academic style that may not suit readers that just want a light, readable introduction to the basic principles of evolution.

The book contains a fairly heavy dose of microbiology, as the authors go to some lengths to detail the biological functions underlying heredity and evolution. This is useful revision for readers with high school science, but tough going for the complete beginner. Similarly, the style is plain and succinct but never light or breezy. This is not a dummy's guide.

Evolution theory took a spectacular wrong turn in the latter part of the 20th century with the emergence of the idea that selection acts only at the gene level, a view popularized by Dawkins's The Selfish Gene. This bizarre notion gained a considerable following and was the subject of a heated dispute between Dawkins and Gould that ended only with the latter's death. Thankfully, sanity has been restored and it is now once again recognized that selection can take place at any level, and it is refreshing to see the Charlesworths, in this book, stating unequivocally (p 74) that there can be selection at species level and at other levels (p 73). Interestingly, there is an extract from a very favorable review by Dawkins of this book, on the back cover. Did he skip pages 73 and 74 or has he at last seen the light?

This series is prone to typos and the mutant printing gene has not been bred out of this particular book. Figure 19 is a monumental example. It is printed in landscape rather than portrait mode, effectively sideways (you'd have to see it to understand) thus leaving half the page blank and half the figure missing. The birds and mammals are therefore cruelly pruned from the tree of life. OUP really should get a grip.

Look elsewhere if you want a true introductory text, but select this if you want an excellent summary of the current state of knowledge of evolution and its underlying biological processes.

The biology of evolution

Two eminent professors of biology, both F.R.S., from the University of Edinburgh have collaborated to write this short monograph in the Oxford series of Short Introductions. It certainly maintains the standard of academic excellence characteristic of this series. The book is full of fascinating facts, illustrated with twenty-one figures. The degree of detail is such that the book might be more suitable as an introduction to evolution for biology students rather than for a lay readership, who might find the book on the same subject by John Maynard Smith slightly less intimidating.

Maynard Smith, the dedicatee of the book, was Brian Charlesworth's mentor at the University of Sussex. Though his book was published in 1958, it has been brought up to date in a new edition for Cambridge (1993) by Richard Dawkins. The book by the Charlesworths has the advantage of being a decade more recent again and in a fast-moving field, currency is important. The short section on mutations of bacteria is particularly good and the illustration (Fig.8) of how DNA codons relate to specific amino acids in proteins is very clear; but I think taking nearly a page to illustrate evolutionary changes in the fossil foraminiferan Globorotalia and another for the phylogenic tree of Darwin's finches is too much information for all but specialist students. Figure 19, criticised by one reviewer, is quite correct in my book.

This book is pure biology: there is nothing here about Intelligent Design (`human beings are the products of impersonal forces') or any other religious issues. In ths, the book follows the materialist approach of the excellent little monographs by Richard Dawkins. The book is clearly written, well illustrated and there is a very good index and therefore unhesitatingly recommended for the serious student of biology.

"Evolution: A Very Short Introduction" (2003) by Brian and Deborah Charlesworth offers a concise, detailed introduction to evolutionary biology. The Charlesworths are both Professors at the University of Edinburgh. Brian Charlesworth is former President of the Society for the Study of Evolution while Deborah Charlesworth has served as President of the European Society of Evolutionary Biology.

The Charlesworths offer the following introduction to this overview of evolution.

"The relentless application of the scientific method of inference from experiment and observation, without reference to religious or government authority, has completely transformed our view of our origins and relation to the universe in less than 500 years. In addition to the intrinsic fascination of the view of the world opened up by science, this has had an enormous impact on philosophy and religion. The findings of science imply that humans are the product of impersonal forces, and that the habitable world forms a minute part of a universe of immense size and duration. Whatever the religious or philosophical beliefs of individual scientists, the whole programme of scientific research is founded on an assumption that the universe can be understood on such a basis."

Evolutionary theory still provokes controversy. The Charlesworths do not hide their view that evolutionary theory is inconsistent with the position of supernatural, intentional creation of separate species. At several points in this introduction, they criticize supernatural creationism directly. Throughout the book, they gather the support for evolution from various strands of science and argue that it is overwhelming.

The Charlesworths begins with a chapter explaining the nature of evolutionary biology drawn from Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace. Then, in two chapters, they offer corroboration for the theory from two separate strands. In the first, the Charlesworths consider similarities and differences between organisms as showing evolution. The most interesting discussion in this chapter considers findings in cell biology and biochemistry. The study of heredity and of the nature of DNA across all forms of life corroborates and expands evolutionary biology in ways not available to Darwin and Wallace.

In their second chapter setting out evidence for evolution, the Charlesworths examine "patterns in time and space", a form of evidence on which both Darwin and Wallace relied. This source of evolutionary theory is based upon the enormous scope of geological time together with the fossil record. Further studies since Darwin and Wallace, including advances in cell biology and dating techniques have served to corroborate and strengthen the early findings.

In the following portions of their study, the Charlesworths discuss how evolution and natural selection explain the adaptation of species to their environment. They describe how evolution accounts for the astonishing diversity and change in living species, and they conclude with a short chapter on difficult problems in evolution, such as accounting for complex organs including, for example, the human eye.

The Charlesworth's study is short but dense. It requires close, careful reading, particularly in the sections involving cell biology. The book offers as a reward for the required effort a renewed understanding for the lay reader of evolution, its basis and importance. In my own case, I studied evolution in school many years ago but found it useful to focus upon it through this book. The Charlesworths' study will also be useful to students coming to evolutionary biology early in their lives. The book includes a brief bibliography for further reading.

I have found the Very Short Introduction Series of Oxford University Press highly useful in exploring a broad range of subjects. I have especially benefitted from books in the series about the sciences in that I have tended to take the sciences for granted though adult life. This study of evolution fits well with other works in the series I have read, including various books about geology, chemistry, and the relationship between science and religion. Readers wanting an informed brief account of evolutionary biology will benefit from the Charlesworth's Very Short Introduction.

About the Author
Roy Treloar is well known as a tutor and author within the plumbing and gas industry. He has been involved in teaching full time since 1985, and since then has undertaken extensive study, including a degree in further education, a diploma in management and an HNC in building studies. In addition to his plumbing and gas qualifications, Roy has also completed his qualifications in electrical installations. He has been Section Head, responsible for all mechanical engineering courses run at Colchester Institute, and has been an external verifier for the City & Guilds, for both the plumbing and gas schemes. He currently works for the Professional Training Centre at Colchester Institute as curriculum development manager, running various courses on mechanical services, including plumbing, gas, heating and electrical work.

When I ordered this book I did not realize it was British. This may very well be a great book for those in Britain, but it does not necessarily reflect the codes and practices of the United States.

This book is of very limited use unless one knows, or wants to learn the metric system, British terminology, building and plumbing codes of England, etc. It is probably a useful book there. I wasted almost $50.

About the Author

Alexander Roy has been driving in international road rallies since 2003. He finished first in the 2006 Gumball 3000 and set a new speed record from New York to Los Angeles, making the nearly 3,000-mile drive in a staggering 32 hours and 7 minutes. When he is not on the road, he lives in New York City.

I usually am not one for the slow slow books, but this one was a masterpiece. The first half of the book focuses on the various bullruns and was thus somehow full of more interesting characters and crazy stories as the author grows as a driver over time. I would say it is excellently paced and puts you in the driver seat in an idealized world that focuses on driving and cars and ignores money, women or work.

Very engrossing tale of one of the most amazing races from cost-to-cost in history that any car guy or gal would enjoy. While a fascinating story. it's not the best written book if I'm honest.You practically need a organization chart to keep track of all the people the author constantly bounces the story line between. Also, the father-son dynamics and navel-gazing "insights" are just a lot of fluff that you have to wade through to get to the good parts. However, it's worth it. Definitely worth the time for an entertaining read.
