Wonderful Book

The translation of the business problem into a Data Mining problem is the key for successful data mining projects. Mr Pyle's book deals with this subject in a remarkable way. The book is organized in four parts. The first part provides an introductory material. It shows a broad view of the modelling and mining. This part allowed me to grasp the key concepts, connect them among themselves and have a "map of the territory" as Mr. Pyle says.
The second part shows many techniques for dealing with business situations and how to translate them into a data mining problem. Many of these topics were new for me and I was able to learn and apply a lot of these powerful methodology.
Part 3 is mainly about the data mining algorithms, different approach to solve data mining problems and how to improve the results. Although I knew about this subject, many topics are discussed in a very interesting point of view.
Finally, the part 4 provides a full interactive methodology which summarizes the previous parts. I have found this part very helpful in my work as business modeling consultant.
Summarizing, I think that this book is excellent and it would be read by anyone who wants to apply data analysis to the real world.

Using data to solve busines problems

A must have for any data miner that takes his profession seriously. Already a classic. Business modeling and data mining are carefully separated, as they should be. This crucial distinction has greatly enlightened my view on business problems. First discover the framework for the business problem, determine the leverage point, and then build and refine the best possible model.
All steps are described in practical detail, making the book extremely actionable, and tool independent. First, how to determine the appropriate problem to analyze? Then, what are the right data, and how do I get them? Only then does the data mining begin, and a groundbreaking, comprehensive methodology is put forward to come up with the best possible model in every circumstance. The business modeling and data mining methodologies explicate at every possible step in the process - what to do, and how to proceed. In addition, a lot of supporting material provides insight on topics like working with conditional probabilities, regression to the mean, visualizing model performance and errors in problem space, etc.
Mr. Pyle's previous book set the mark with regards to data preparation. This book is much broader in its scope and should actually be read before the previous one. It's pretty hefty, but more than worth the read. In my opinion it should also be mandatory for `data savvy' marketers as well, for instance as textbook in contemporary MBA courses.

Loved This Fantastic Overview of Railway Stations

Featuring a wide range of historic and modern stations across America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, this book includes the history, architectural details, and why stations are located where they are. The history of places like New York's old Penn Station, the many stations in Philadelphia, Union Passenger Terminal in L.A., and little-city stations across the northeast USA are displayed in lovely photographs. The details about stations abroad provides a nice comparison with railroad stations in the USA, with very different railroad histories unfolding in countries like Germany, Japan, and Australia. This is a great book for anyone interested in the history of railroads and architecture.

Excellent book and companion to the RHCE study guide!

This book was written with the intentions of being used with Michael Jang's other RHCSA / RHCE Study Guide (http://www.amazon.com/RHCSA-Linux-Certification-Study-Edition/dp/0071765654/)

I have both of these books. I used the RHCSA / RHCE study guide to earn my RHCE a few months ago, but I also have this companion as a tool to keep sharp. This is another well written, well thought out book by Mr. Jang. He gives excellent exercises and examples in the text, and they are all designed to work in tandem with the virtual machines he includes on the DVD that ships with the book. He gives great instructions for setting up the virtual machines in the book, which essentially gives you a perfect "Practice Lab" that is essential to retaining the RHCE knowledge.

If you are looking at this book, I assume you know that the Red Hat exams are purely practical and very difficult. With both of Mr. Jangs study guide and companion (this book), you will have everything you need to go from barely knowing linux, to being able to master both the RHCSA and RHCE exams. I have been fortunate to attend actual Red Hat training, and these books were the perfect study companion as well.

I honestly cant give this book a good enough review it is that good. I can only attest that without these books, earning my RHCE would have been *difficult*. In the linux field, this is the most highly recommend books for Red Hat based distributions. Not only will they serve you well in preparation for the exams, they will give you years of benefit as a solid desk reference. Mr. Jang gives great explanations of the How's and Why's of each subject, that you actually learn the materials.

Just be ware, This book is designed to be used as the companion to his main study guide. I would recommend that you buy both of Mr. Jang's Red Hat books if you are planning to sit for the exams. Read them. Do the exercises at the end of each chapter, answer the questions. Don't move on to the next chapter until you feel you have mastered the current one. The questions and exercises he gives in both the Study Guide and this Companion are designed to reinforce the material he taught in that chapter. The books are also well laid out, in that you will learn all the tools you need first, before you move on to the advanced chapters.

Concise, thorough, well written

Pre-ordered this book before it was released and got it early. It's great. It assumes very little knowledge to begin with which was frustrating at first because I was looking for a review. This book was recommended to me by a RedHat instructor. The author's preface goes on and on about how this is not a replacement for instruction from RedHat, and so on. Hooey on that. If you have access to a decent 64-bit computer (required by the virtual machines that come with the book), and a CentOS iso (or you can download one), you will be well on your way toward mastery. Read the book, do the exercises, read the recommended reading and take the assesment tests on RedHat's site, and you'll do fine. Aced the RHCSA and feel comfortable with testing for RHCE which I will do early December.
I recommend this book to anyone really dedicated to RedHat certification. There is a lot of work to do on your part; this book is merely a guide, but it is a very competent guide.

Good book, good practice questions & exams - not so great VMs

I'll start off by saying that I own both the Study Guide and this Practice Exams guide. Many people in my office have purchased copies and find these to be the most useful, authoritative prep out there for these exams.

Thanks Mike Jang for keeping this series current.

Now for my gripes:

1. I expected that the contents of the physical book would be included as PDFs on the DVD or within the gamma VM as I'm accustomed to from the study guide. They are not.

2. The practice VMs idea had promise, but I found the execution to not have turned out so great. I think this would have been better of as a compressed folder that you'd drop on the home dir of your main VM, perhaps with a simple shell script to do any VM customization (not really necessary). You're far better served by standing up 3 current Scientific Linux 6.3 VMs on a Scientific Linux 6.3 physical box using virt-manager, then copying the exam and lab files and folders over to your own VMs.

The McGraw Hill YUM repository included in the VM's yum.repos.d is worthless at best and troublesome at worst (broken mirror errors galore) - if you use the VMs make sure you just disable those right away and use the proper Scientific Linux repositories.

All in all a good book, if I could do half-stars I'd give it a 3.5.

About the Author

Petter �stb� is currently EVP of Production at Yara International and was previously the head of global optimization where he came up with the productivity system and the concept around it. Before joining Yara Petter was a consultant McKinsey.

Robin Cattermole is currently VP Head of Global Planning and Optimization at Yara has held various senior supply chain and production positions. He was the architect of the productivity system and responsible for its global roll out.

Mark Wetherill is an operational manager and lean practitioner with many years’ experience in factory management.� As one on the original instigators of the productivity system he supported �its deployment �at Yara sites across the world. He is now head of productivity for Yara’s global network of small sites.

Worth its weight in gold

You will never find more profound and powerful spiritual teachings than that of Neville Goddard. He's the best teacher on the art and practice of manifestation. I started reading his books when I was in my early 20s, but it was not until I was in my 30s that my life changed for the better through the daily and consistent use of his ideas. Stay in peace mode/mood

This is one of the best of the Neville Goddard lecture books. He describes exactly how to change your life if it isn't satisfying to you. That sounds so simplistic but I have been reading his books for the past 3 or 4 years, and it isn't just a DIY book although you can use it that way when you first start on this path, but it describes so deeply how to get where I have been wanting to go for quite a long time. I have wanted to remain at peace in the midst of chaos. I have gotten there and will continue to practice these techniques so I remain there. His books are unbelievable!

Pure facts and no bias

Read the book and loved it. It is very fact based and provides many cross references and notes. Each chapter compares different arguments for creationism and evolution but does so without bias. There are in depth scientific explanations and details in every point. Clearly a well researched book. Reminded me a lot of "The Universe In a Nutshell" by Hawking...but with more facts and references.

Whichever side of the aisle you are own, this book provides a plethora of information and talking points. If you are undecided, Evolution or Creation, this book will give you all the information you need to make a decision.

Compare DeBenedictis' discussion of the sea cucumber on page 275 of "Evolution or Creation?" and pages 139-140 of "Why Evolution is True" by Jerry Coyne, published in 2009. Substantially all of the two discussions about sea cucumbers are identical. At first I thought that Coyne was an invited contributor to DeBenedictis' book. But if he was not, then how does DeBenedictis explain this duplication, and how many more such examples exist in his book? Who is the REAL author of this book?
