Preston and Child are co-authors of the Agent Pendergast series as well as the Gideon Crew series. Beyond the Ice Limit -- Preston and Child ably channel H.P. Lovecraft

Preston and Child have ably adapted H.P. Lovecraft's concept of cosmic outsideness to a modern science fiction/horror story. The style of writing, of course, is nothing like Lovecraft's, but the concepts pay homage to the Cthulhu Mythos, and especially, "The Colour Out of Space." As in "Colour" the extra-terrestrial entity in "Beyond the Ice Limit" is completely divorced from our typical concept of alien life and intelligence, and is in many respects, simply unknowable. The story is really interesting and works both as a sequel to "The Ice Limit" and as a stand-alone novel. I would rate it as quite the best Gideon Crew novel, and amongst the very best, most original stories, that Preston and Child have written, both in collaboration and individually.

Gave Me Nightmares!

I don't write reviews often and I really should. I depend on the Amazon book reviews to decide what I'm going to read next, so I should contribute more. This book was unputdownable for me. I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. I saw some one star reviews complaining about the worms, but I loved them! They were so horrifying to me that I actually had a nightmare one night that I was pulling one out of my face. ::shudders:: In addition to the creepy crawlies, this book was action packed. I love Gideon Crew. He's such a wonderful character. The setting was perfect too, the deep ocean in the barren Artic. This review is written by a very picky horror/thriller/sci-fi addict who rarely gets this enthusiastic over a book. It's truly a fun ride!

Now We Know What Happened....

I've been reading Lincoln / Child books for about 10 years now and immediately fell in love with the Pendergast books like most of their readers. I was a fan of Sherlock Holmes stories and these were definitely a spiritual successor to Doyle. Those books began to feel a little stale and I slowly started to warm up to the Gideon stories that the writers introduced a number of years ago. I thought that Beyond The Ice Limit tidied up the original story well. While some portions of the plot seemed a little far fetched, it was a page turner and was essential for any reader that has wondered what happened to the alien seed pod at the end of Ice Limit. Hopefully, Lincoln and Child will see fit to keep Gideon around a little longer.
