About the Author
Angela Freeman is an author, adviser and radio talk show host dedicated to the advancement of the Black community. Her first project was a landmark book entitled "God's Gift, How to be a Good Black Woman to a Strong Black Man". She has now added the title "Conscious Entertaining: The Return of the Domestic Goddess" to her resume. Angela is also creating a line of children's books for Black Nationalists. Angela's popular internet radio show, "Message to the BlackFam" airs every other Tuesday night from 7-9pm EST on War on the Horizon Radio. Despite her many roles, the one that gives her the most fulfillment is being a devoted wife and parent. She believes that there can never be a strong Black community until we create stable Black families.

Far far better than I could have written in a lifetime!

This book really hits the nail on the head. I've been struggling with custom controls for weeks searching every article on the web and all over Microsoft and MSDN. No place has demonstrated the depth of understanding anywhere near as well as Matthew MacDonald has done. Not only are there clear and to the point examples without getting bogged-down in some lengthy, arcane and mythical tasks, but the accompanying text describes the underlying 'why' that is almost more useful than the code. Every page has some exceedingly useful information. My project has been in C# but the translation from VB from the book to C# is a no-brainer (assuming you've written in both over the last few years).
I pride myself as a descriptive writer but this book is far better than I could have written myself. It is to the point and thorough. If were any better it would wake you gently in the morning and make your coffee.

Well worth the time to read it.

If you really need the information to make your applications just that next step better, this is a great book. It is not a quick and easy read, but it is well worth the time that it takes to thoroughly read through it. I'm an intermediate level programmer (at best) and this book has helped take my work to the next level of professionalism.
After you've read through it, and know what it contains, the excellent index will help you easily go back and find that little tidbit of information that you need.
I will be buying his book on WPF also. Nice job Mr. MacDonald.

Excellent Resource!

This book is full of simple tidbits for binding controls to data objects and custom objects. The examples are short and easy to follow so you don't get lost in the code. Matthew does not spend a lot of time explaining background code (specifically, using ADO) because this is not the forum for those topics. What you get is 1000+ pages of explanations and examples focused on the task at hand: binding data. He does spend a few chapters introducing you to the various objects, covering many not-so-common functions. I found myself thinking "Wow!! That's cool!" several times. I highly recommend this book!!

Book Was So Good Read It Straight Through

I agree with the other reviewer this book is not for the faint of heart. Christina Turnbow is selling her vrginity to the Marguess of Dane to pay the family's debts .He is the most depraved person and uses all women as whores.You will soon learn why he has become such a man . The sex scenes are very erotic and detailed I did not care for the bondage scences but there was a reason for them.. Dane tried to do everything he could to make Christina hate him but a love is unfolding between them. You can't stop reading till you see if from all he put her through if they will find true love. Please be aware this is not for people who don't want to read a book with sex in it.

A depraved hero falling head-over-heels for the heroine, but their journey to fulfillment is not a bed of roses

I was looking for a diversion and Eliza Lloyd's "The Darkness in the Marquess of Dane" sounded like something that'd fit my mood. I was also quite ready to dismiss it as ‘another one of those Regency porn’ but the author made me realize that this novel is not as simple as that. Since this was my first book by Eliza, I had no prior expectations and quite delightfully discovered that I found something worth my time. Something I absolutely enjoyed. It had a more complex hero than I hoped to find, and a graceful and strong heroine who beat down the door to his depraved soul without even trying. Dane didn't quite grasp just how much he wanted to live after years of loosing himself into the darkness, not until he met Christina, and his long buried heart instantly recognized whom it wanted as it's savior. It should've been easy for them since Christina wanted him, fault and all, however, their journey to fulfillment wasn't a bed of roses. Not even close.

I can't give away much without spoiling but if you're not squeamish and love a true dark, debauched hero falling head-over-heels for a woman anyone would truly admire, then this book is for you. For those who would like to be alerted, remember it's an erotic historical so there are plenty of all sorts of supremely hot sex scenes. Vast majority is between the H and h. You don't need to worry over OW dramas. I hate those too.

Great "Old School" book for modern lifters

I highly recommend this book to all strength trainees. It is old but not out-dated. It covers the whole gamut of lifting from bodybuilding, and powerlifting to the Olympic lifts and provides good basic routines and photographs depicting the various exercises.

I first read this book when I was at university back in the late 70's and as a very skinny beginning lifter I immediately put the Heavy-Light-Medium routine in action. I made incredible gains on this program - around 40# in 9 months, amazing my friends and family with my new size and muscle. Granted, new lifters typically can gain on almost any program, but I am glad that I started out with a good "common sense" routine as opposed to those presented in the various bodybuilding comics.

Eventually I did follow those comic book routines and that is when my progress stopped. I spent many years in the hell of training confusion, overly complex routines and information overload, trying to emulate the steroid bloated bodybuilders/lifters of the day. As a "natural" I didn't stand a chance. The only way a "natural" should train in the long term is on a basic routine consisting of the compound exercises, allowing for plenty of recovery time between sessions; that is if you want to keep making progress and not stall out for what could be many years of wasting your time.

During a recent scan of Mark Rippetoe's "Starting Strength" I found this exact same protocol being touted: Heavy-Light-Medium, 3 days/week making use of the compound lifts such as squats, deadlifts, presses, power cleans, etc and Rippetoe's expertise is much respected. (I believe Bill Starr was perhaps the first to suggest this type of routine in "The Strongest Shall Survive")

I have recently returned to this training protocol and I feel like some sanity has returned to my lifting endeavors. This book is a great one to have in your library as a reference and as a great guide to whichever form of lifting you prefer.

About the Author

Philip B. Smith was an American-Dutch experimental physicist. He taught for eight years in Brazil as a McCarthy-era exile, and later joined the University of Groningen as a professor of physics. Manfred Max-Neef is a Chilean-German economist in the field of international development. His key works are From the Outside Looking In: Experiences in 'Barefoot Economics' and Human Scale Development, the latter declared by the University of Cambridge as one of the 50 most important books on sustainability. He taught at the University of California–Berkeley and is currently director of the Economics Institute of the Universidad Austral de Chile.

a scholarly explanation for the state of the world

Wondered why the world is so messed up, in spite of so many brilliant economists prognosticating away? This book argues that the economics currently practiced across most of the world is a theory designed to protect the wealth of the rich and the power of the powerful. It persists because it works so well at achieving precisely those goals. Little problems like climate change and depressions are things the uber-wealthy can deal with, and they have been doing very well, thanks to their economic system. If we aspire to a different outcome, with goals like ecological sustainability, social justice, freedom as described by Amartya Sen, then we must choose a different economic theory to get us there. The book is scholarly, detailed, and uses selected data and historical quotes to bolster its thesis. It makes a powerful argument for why the world is the way it is, and where we will end up unless we make profound and fundamental changes.

I recently saw Manfred Max-Neef on Democracy Now and was soon on the phone with my local book store ordering his book before the 30 minute interview was over.

In this book Max-Neef makes the crucial point of our time: "economics should serve people, not people serve the economy."

This book took me back to my first weeks in Micro-economics 101, a class that never made sense to me. I kept wondering: "where are they getting these numbers? Can you quantify something like that? How can you assume that's what everyone wants?" In addition my libertarian teacher assured me NAFTA had made everyone's life better, and that wages had risen. When I asked how in a deindustrialized place like Michigan you could ever suggest such a thing, he replied: "well, it hasn't happened yet, but it will."

Thus my introduction to one of our country's most esoteric of religions: economics. "It's not that our models are faulty--they're just not accurate enough yet." Maybe Jesus didn't make it on our last prediction of his return, but it turns out we miscalculated.

Max-Neef makes the startling point that eventually rising GDP leads to falling quality of life for the average citizen after a certain point. He contrasts "development" and "growth," and finds the US to be an underdeveloped nation. Max-Neef charts the basic needs of human beings in an all-encompassing and complex way, rather than assuming if we're not starving to death and have plenty of cheap, child labor-produced clothes at Target to buy, we are by default developing.

I found myself, just as I did during the interview on Democracy Now!, saying "YES! YES!" out loud. This book dares you to imagine what could be, rather than just assume the exploitation of human beings and the environment is just a fact of life.

With climate change and oil shocks on the way, it's time for a new model, not a more accurate version of the old one.

An eye opening look at the field of economics, capitalism, and what it means for humanity.

This is a truly well written book. The authors do a great job of setting up their critique of neo-liberal economic policy, as well as main stream economic theory. It is a very soundly based argument that also offers solutions and examples of success at the micro level. To me, the most powerful part was the analysis of what the study of economics is, isn't, and maybe should be, as well as the information regarding neo-liberal economics and where it has brought us thus far. Highly recommended for all!
