I think the book was very interesting and I like how I learned as read. "My destiny is assured. I have a decided heart.'' I would recommend this book to someone else because it was very detailed and made sense. I think the audience that the novel if written for ages 10 and up because I think those ages would understand what the book is talking about.

About the Author
Stephen J. Reynolds is the author of the highly successful Exploring Geology, Stephen Reynolds is bringing his innovation and strong visual content to Exploring Physical Geography. Stephen J. Reynolds received an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at El Paso, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geosciences from the University of Arizona. He then spent ten years directing the geologic framework and mapping program of the Arizona Geological Survey, completing a new Geologic Map of Arizona. Steve currently is a professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University, where he has taught various courses about regional geology, earth resources, evolution of landscapes, field studies, and teaching methods. As a National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) distinguished speaker, he traveled across the country presenting talks and workshops on how to infuse active learning and inquiry into large introductory geology classes. He is commonly an invited speaker to national workshops and symposia on active learning, visualization, and teaching.

Peter Waylen is Robin and Jean Gibson Professor of Geography at the University of Florida. He holds a B.Sc. in Geography from the Lon�don School of Economics, England, and a Ph.D. from McMaster University, Canada. He has also served as Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, visiting Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada, Hartley Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, England, and Visiting Scholar in the Department of Engineering Hydrology, University College Galway, Ireland. His teaching and research interests are in the fields of hydrology and climatology, particularly the temporal and spatial variability of risks of such hazards as floods, droughts, freezes, and heat waves, and the way in which these vary in the long run, driven by global scale phenomenon like ENSO. He has worked throughout Anglo- and Latin America, and several parts of Africa. He teaches Introductory Physical Geography, Principles of Geographic Hydrology, and Models in Hydrology, and was selected University of Florida Teacher of the Year in 2002.

Robert Rohli received a B.A. in geography from the University of New Orleans, an M.S. degree in atmospheric sciences from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in geography from Louisiana State University (LSU). He is currently in his 14th year at LSU, with his time is divided between Faculty Director of the LSU Residential Colleges Program and Professor of Geography. Previously, he served as Assistant Professor of Geography at Kent State University (KSU) and as Regional Climatologist at the South�ern Regional Climate Center. His teaching and research interests are in physical geography, particularly synoptic and applied meteorology/climatology, atmospheric circulation variability, and hydroclimatology. He has taught Physical Geography, Climatology, Meteorology, Physical Climatology, World Climates, Methods in Synoptic Climatology, Applied Meteorology, Analysis of Spatial Data, Water Resources Geography, and others.

Mark Francek is a geography professor at Central Michigan University (CMU). Before com�ing to CMU in 1988, Francek earned his doctorate in geography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, his master’s in geography from the University of South Carolina, and his bachelor’s degree in geography and psychology from the State University College at Geneseo, New York. He has teaching and research interests in earth science education, physical geography, and soil science. Mark has pedaled twice across America and teaches biking geography field classes in around the Great Lakes region and Appalacian Mountains. He has authored and coauthored more than 30 scholarly papers, funded in part by the NSF and the State of Michigan, and has presented his research at numerous national and state conferences. At CMU, Francek has served as acting director of the Environmental Studies Program and Director of the Science and Technology Residential College.

Julia K. Johnson is currently a full-time faculty member in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University. Her M.S. and Ph.D. research involved structural geology and geoscience education research. The main focus of her geoscience education research is on student- and instructor-generated sketches for learning, teaching, and assessment in college geology classes. Prior to coming to ASU, she did groundwater studies of copper deposits and then taught full time in the Maricopa County Community College District, teaching Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, and their labs. At ASU, she teaches Introduction to Geology to nearly 1,000 students per year and supervises the associated introductory geology labs. She also coordinates the introductory geology teaching efforts of the School of Earth and Space Exploration, helping other instructors incorporate active learning and inquiry into large lecture classes.

When Faith is stalked by a boy at her new school, a secret admirer comes to her rescue. Only who is the admirer and how does he know so freaking much about her? It's kind of freaking her out--until she discovers it's the smokin' hot guy she's been secretly craving--her ex-best-friend, the guy she has secretly wanted to kiss since she was twelve. Awesome! Only, is he craving her back ... or what?

This is a standalone novel. It is 70,000 words (300 pages). The ending is not a cliffhanger. No other book needs to be read before this or after. The book is loosely based off Melanie Marks' short story, also titled "Little Dancer" that was first published a few years ago. One of the storylines is also loosely based off Melanie Marks' book, Always Hers. However, Always Hers is a paranormal story and this novel is not.

Not a fan of this one...

Not my favorite. In fact, this book left me a little sick to my stomach.

First, the romance begins when they are twelve and I have to say, I was with Rune' s mom on this one. They were way to young for such an intense relationship.

Second, she had already had a super intense relationship with an older boy who turned out to be unhinged. She was barely 12. What kind of parent is cool with a twelve year old girl having an older boyfriend and going on dates and being that serious at that age. I know she did some fibbing near the end but her parents should have been more aware. They were way too clueless. (Plus, she has how many more stalkers and slightly too obsessed boys in her life later? That was a little too much to swallow.)

Third, what kind of mom lets her 12/13 year old stay alone while she is out of town and expects her to cover for her at work when she has headaches. I get it, they were migraines, but no way should her child be covering her shifts. And it doesn't matter what was going on with Faith' s aunt, Faith should have been her number 1 priority.

Fourth, it got a little too Wuthering Heights for a while there. I don't mean that as a compliment and I'm not saying the stories were the same either. The similarities were in the needless torture. They tortured each other using their love against one another. Not as cruelly or wildly as Heathcliff and Catherine but purposely, selfishly, immaturely, and unnecessarily. Come on, at least Heathcliff and Catherine had a reason they couldn't be together. Unless you count Rune' s "teenage boy needs" as a reason, Rune and Faith had no reason other than an unwillingness to be honest. Of course they were just children so I can't say I was really routing for them to get together until the end. The intensity of their relationship at such a young age was uncomfortable to read.

Then at the end, it was kind of a let down. They went through all this years of torture and now they are finally at an age were puberty has wound down and more adult like emotions and responses have kicked in. I, as the reader, am finally on board with their love and all they get is a fizzle of a conclusion. It was hardly satisfying.

Reused story from her other books and way too much self-inflicted emo-angst

This story was very frustrating. The reviewer who said that Rune and Faith torment each other for no good reason other than because the plot would fall apart without it was completely correct - the story could have been a quarter of the length and much better if they hadn't been playing stupid games with each other about "I love you, I love you not".
The author tries to save all of the crazy in the end by justifying Rune's behavior with him not wanting to be all creepy-stalker like her previous boyfriend, but honestly, it didn't work. They were thirteen/fourteen -- it should have been perfectly fine for them to just be friends and honestly, it doesn't paint Rune in the most flattering light for him to be using another girl to distract him from the girl he supposedly really loves.
True love doesn't play games.
Lastly, because I've read a lot of Melanie Marks' stories in the last few days, I noticed that some of the scenes were reused from other stories, almost word for word. That was very disappointing and frustrating. I have no idea why she did that or how she thought that would be okay - did she not expect her readers to read her other books?

made me cry

this book is more amazing than any book i have ever read. the story is the mosg beautiful love story i have ever heard and positive that i ever will. not only is it a beautiful story but it is also beautifully written. I cried half way threw and my tears did not stoo coming until about an hour after i fished te book, and i have never cried because of a book. in my opinion there are three kinds of books; ones that are bad so you dont recomend them, ones that are pretty good o you recomend them and then there are the ones that are so amazing and special, that you want them for yourself so you dont recomend them. i was seriously considering writting a horrible review for this book because it is the kind you want for yourself, but after i read i i saw that it was rated 2 stars and thought thi auther deserves the truth even though im kinda hoping no one else reads thjs book. anhway this is by far and i mean far my favorite book and trust me i have read alot over my years. so i highly recomend thus book even though i dont want anyone to read it.

Michael Lewis was supposed to be writing about how Jim Clark, the founder of Silicon Graphics and Netscape, was going to turn health care on its ear by launching Healtheon, which would bring the vast majority of the industry's transactions online. So why was he spending so much time on a computerized yacht, each feature installed because, as one technician put it, "someone saw it on Star Trek and wanted one just like it?"

Much of The New New Thing, to be fair, is devoted to the Healtheon story. It's just that Jim Clark doesn't do startups the way most people do. "He had ceased to be a businessman," as Lewis puts it, "and become a conceptual artist." After coming up with the basic idea for Healtheon, securing the initial seed money, and hiring the people to make it happen, Clark concentrated on the building of Hyperion, a sailboat with a 197-foot mast, whose functions are controlled by 25 SGI workstations (a boat that, if he wanted to, Clark could log onto and steer--from anywhere in the world). Keeping up with Clark proves a monumental challenge--"you didn't interact with him," Lewis notes, "so much as hitch a ride on the back of his life"--but one that the author rises to meet with the same frenetic energy and humor of his previous books, Liar's Poker and Trail Fever.

Like those two books, The New New Thing shows how the pursuit of power at its highest levels can lead to the very edges of the surreal, as when Clark tries to fill out an investment profile for a Swiss bank, where he intends to deposit less than .05 percent of his financial assets. When asked to assess his attitude toward financial risk, Clark searches in vain for the category of "people who sought to turn ten million dollars into one billion in a few months" and finally tells the banker, "I think this is for a different ... person." While it purports to look at the business world of Silicon Valley through the lens of one man, that one man, Jim Clark, is so domineering that the book is essentially about Clark. No matter: Clark is as successful and interesting an example of Homo siliconus as any writer is likely to find. Lewis (Liar's Poker) has created an absorbing and extremely literate profile of one of America's most successful entrepreneurs. Clark has created three companiesASilicon Graphics, Netscape (now part of America Online) and HealtheonAeach valued at more than $1 billion by Wall Street. Lewis was apparently given unlimited access to Clark, a man motivated in equal parts by a love of the technology he helps to create and a desire to prove something to a long list of people whom he believes have done him wrong throughout his life (especially his former colleagues at Silicon Graphics). As Lewis looks at the various roles of venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and programmers and at how these very different mindsets fit together in the anatomy of big deals, he gives readers a sense of how the Valley works. But the heart of the book remains Clark, who simultaneously does everything from supervise the creation of what may be the world's largest sloop to creating his fourth company (currently in the works). Lewis does a good job of putting Clark's accomplishments in context, and if he is too respectful of Clark's privacy (several marriages and children are mentioned but not elaborated on), he provides a detailed look at the professional life of one of the men who have changed the world as we know it. First, it offers an insightful look at the life and career of Dr. Jim Clark, the eccentric but brilliant visionary who thus far has created three multi-billion-dollar ground-breaking enterprises--Silicon Graphics, Netscape, and Healtheon. Second, it gives an insider's look at how the concept of the "new new thing" has been translated into an actionable product by key players in the game. Finally, it presents a social history of Silicon Valley, which has become the primary driver for worldwide social, economic, and political change. Although a little slow at times, this book is a great read and tells a compelling story. Highly recommended for both academic and public libraries.

Wonderfully framed narrative

Lewis has a genuine gift for taking complex concepts (as he did in Moneyball, Boomerang, and Liar's Poker) and breaking it down in a narrative format that manages to convey a maximum amount of meaning into the story. In "The New New Thing" Lewis focuses on Jim Clark's ascent in the world of Silicon Valley entrepreneurship and Clark's persistent pursuit of the titular "new new thing."

Explaining the how's, why's, and differences between the old way of doing things and the new (or new new) way of doing things can be tricky, because it assumes you have some understanding of how the old (or old old) way of doing things works. I'm not a Wall Street investor, but I felt not only capable of understanding Lewis' framework of explanation, but I felt like I could extrapolate deeper meaning from it. He manages to paint fascinating pictures of all the people involved in the pursuit of the new new thing and how their constellation manages to orbit itself as it becomes standard operating practice in the growing tech industry.

I also felt like I could better understand how the minds of billionaire "executives" (as Lewis points out, Jim Clark wasn't exactly sure how to describe exactly what it was he does) and how they anticipate the next new new thing, why it interests them, and how quickly it starts to lose their interest. If you can understand someone like Clark, you can start to understand the industry.

Lewis's Worst--But still worth reading.

It is difficult to rate this book. While it is entertaining and somewhat informative and Michael Lewis writes well and tells a good tale--I've read nearly all his books--this is still his WORST book.

Does that that mean I wouldn't recommend it? No! I still liked it, and would recommend it as a "good" read, I was disappointed because I expect a "great" read from this author.

typical Lewis: interesting and readable

y least favorite of the in-depth Lewis books, but that's not saying much. Unlike Liar's Poker, which Lewis thought would bring sweeping change by bringing some sketchy practices to light but still rings true, The New New Thing feels dated now, 10 years later. Nonetheless, as someone who understood the late 1990s tech boom only peripherally, this book was insightful, both in terms of those companies' business models (or lack thereof, as the case may be) and some of the relevant personalities. (Still important: Larry Ellison, John Doerr)

Although I doubt commercial interest warrants, this book could use an updated epilogue, particularly surrounding Healtheon/WebMD, which I have to think does not at all match the original vision.

As usual, very well written and engaging; always the case with Lewis. I didn't find Jim Clark as sympathetic as I think I was intended to, and as a result some of the chapters focused on him personally (especially his flying a helicopter, and sailing his boat across the Atlantic) dragged a bit.

By mid-1914, DELAG had carried over 10,000 fare-paying passengers on over 1500 flights. When war hit, it was employed to military advantage, wreaking carnage upon Britain's towns and cities. German defeat in 1918 temporarily halted the airship business (many had to be surrendered under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles), although it did bounce back with the construction of the Graf Zeppelin in the 30s. A series of terrible accidents was soon to signal the demise of the Zeppelin however; following the Hindenburg disaster of 1937, and in the midst of a host of political and economic issues, the Zeppelin was soon to be consigned to the history books as one of the great aviation relics of the 20th Century. This new publication explores each facet of its history, and concludes by assessing the legacy of rigid airship development, still felt to this day.

About the Author

Ravi Sethi, director of Computing Science Research, has been at AT&T Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey since 1976. He has held teaching positions at Pennsylvania State university and the University of Arizona, and has taught at Princeton University and Rutgers. Dr. Sethi is co-author of the "dragon book", Compilers: Principles, Techniques and Tools and has written numerous articles. His books have been translated in Japanese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Korean.
