About the Author
Dr Raffaele D'Amato is an experienced Turin-based researcher of the ancient world. He is an external professor to the Athens University School of Philosophy and Material Culture. This is his first book for Osprey.

Centurions - a brief history from the monarchy to the Caesarian period

Not so many years ago, it was easy to publish a book on roman military matters; there were so few in print that it would sell anyway. Today any book on this subject MUST bring added value to their readers. And that is the main strength of Professor Raffaele D'Amato and his favorite illustrator Giuseppe Rava. This tag team publishes magnificent works with photos that I've never seen before (and I study this field for 20 years). You will find brilliant interpretations of known reliefs and other less known sources. If not for the author I would never have found the frieze from an Augustan funerary monument representing an officer's panoply which is preserved inside the church of St Domenico; or a photo of details of the arch of Orange in 1902 (before the damage of pollution and wear took most of the details of the reliefs); or the masked helmet with a stylized face of a Silenus (current location unknown).

But this book is much more than a compilation of rarely seen images (alongside the more well known representations of roman centurions); the reader gets a good overview of the evolution of the centurion through the monarchy until the later consular period. Their responsibilities, what was expected of them, their weapons and armor, some anecdotes of famous centurions feats like Dentatus, Baculos or Scaeva. You will get a glimpse of both the bravery (they really led from the front and used their exemplary courage as badges of office) and the brutal (to their legionaries, enemies, etc) facets of centurion's lives.

There is another title from the same author focusing on the centurions of the principate and dominate periods that will be available in February 2012.

The plates are very, very good, Rava never disappoints his fans. I advise reading Mr. Simon Review for a detailed description of the color plates.

For such a small book, who could ask for more? Highly recommended.

Doing so much...and so nice, with so little

Excellent book on a relatively unknown field. In contrast with the large amount of books dealing with the roman army, there was no literature covering the theme. Thoroughly researched, all aspects of the institution from equipment to selection and even individual characters being dealt with, this book goes as far as it is possible gathering bits of information from many varied sources.
Very well written and structured, it is a nice reading; the amount of space dedicated to the equipment and military structure is correctly covered and in a lively style, avoiding what in other works is just an inventory of items.
Not just the only work on the backbone of the Roman army...but a nice succint monography -there's another volume of the series on a later period- on a little, or perhaps not all, documented theme

A very good introduction to the subject

This is a very interesting volume, looking at the most famous of Roman military figures. As well as detailing the history of the rank in relation to the various organisations of the Roman army we also get a look at the various `Italian' opponents. There are `case studies' of individual centurions where evidence exists.

The colour plates are excellent, with a mixture of figures and action scenes, as well as showing allies and enemies. This is a very good companion volume to the other Ospreys on the early Roman army.

About the Author

Karim Yaghmour is the founder and president of Opersys, a company providing expertise and courses on the use of open source and free software in embedded systems, and Kryptiva, a a provider of email security services. Being himself an active member of the open source and free software community, Karim has firmly established Opersys's services around the core values of knowledge sharing and technical quality promoted by this community. As part of his community involvement, Karim is the maintainer of the Linux Trace Toolkit and the author of a series of white-papers that led to the implementation of the Adeos nanokernel, which allows multiple operating systems to exist side-by-side.

Karim's quest for understanding how things work started at a veryyoung age when he took it upon himself to break open all the radiosand cassette players he could lay his hands on in order to "fix"them. Very early, he developed a keen interest in operating systeminternals and embedded systems. He now holds a B.Eng. and anM.A.Sc. from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. While everyonewas hacking away at Linux, Karim even took a detour to write his owndistributed micro-kernel in order to get to the bottom of operatingsystem design and implementation. When not working on software, Karimindulges in his passion for history, philosophy, sociology, andhumanities in general. He's especially addicted to essays and novelsby Umberto Eco and Gerald Messadie.

Jonathan Masters works on the Linux kernel for Red Hat.

Gilad Ben-Yossef is the cofounder and CTO of Codefidence TD. and has been assisting OEMs make use of free and open source software in commercial products and services since 1998. He is also cofounder of Hamakor, an NPO devoted to the promotion of FOSS in Israel, and a founding organizer of "August Penguin," an Israeli community FOSS conference.

This book is not for novices. You will need to be familiar with embedded systems and Linux previous to reading it, but once the prerequisites are met, this book serves as a great resource.

Great source for working engineers

I've been an embedded software engineer for years, but I haven't done all the different parts of a project. There's always someone else who does the bootloader, or writes a particular class of driver. When a coworker loaded my his copy of Building Embedded Linux Systems, I jumped at the chance to learn some of those areas where my experience did not reach. Within a few days I ordered my own copy and I'm in the middle of reading it. This book has just the right balance of high-level organization information with low-level, how to do it, details. Excellent book.

Terrible value!

Although this book is a little over 120 pages, literally over half of these pages are blank and are to be used for taking "Notes". Unfortunately, each page that contained writing on the subject of negotiating with freight brokers provided very little value in regards to negotiation techniques in the industry. How someone can charge almost $50 for the material in this book is ridiculous. I believed I was purchasing educational material that was professionally written and instead have a $50 notebook for my five year old.

Desperately needs editing

The author has obviously carried out extensive research on his subject, the motivation for which would appear to be to highlight the disparity between his own country, Australia and Norway; the former which has allowed its irreplaceable natural resources to be plundered leaving no legacy for future generations, whereas the Norwegians have not only restricted the removal of oil and gas but so diligently and successfully created a fund for the future. Unfortunately this book has either not been edited at all or has been by someone who has ducked their responsibilities.

Over and over again the author repeats himself about a subject. Whether it be the approach of the UK to North Sea oil, their safety statistics (or lack of) or the main subject itself, Norway's approach to North Sea oil extraction. Dates are completely muddled, sending the reader from the1960s, through to the '90s and back to the '70s in one sentence. Some information is interesting but so much is lost through a lack of structure, which really ought to have been picked up by any worthy editor.

My interest fell apart early on though, after I read in Chapter 2 "......the UK's economic fortunes were declining under the Labour Government led by Edward Heath". For those who don't spot the error, the UK government in 1965 WAS Labour but led by Harold Wilson. Edward Heath did become Conservative Prime Minister later (for a very short period) and whatever skeletons may lurk (still) in his cupboard, what is for certain, being a member of the Labour party certainly is not one of them. This kind of monumental mistake makes one loose confidence in a book of non-fiction as you cannot believe the rest.

Mandelbrot's fractal geometry provides both a description and a mathemat ical model for many of the seemingly complex forms and patterns in nature and the sciences. Fractals have blossomed enormously in the past few years and have helped reconnect pure mathematics research with both natural sciences and computing. Computer graphics has played an essential role both in its de velopment and rapidly growing popularity. Conversely, fractal geometry now plays an important role in the rendering, modelling and animation of natural phenomena and fantastic shapes in computer graphics.

Seems to be more about nice pictures than any application to real world problems.
I guess I should have read the title before I purchased, rather than just the ratings.
I was also expecting more colour graphics, as it is their relegated to a few pages here and there rather than interspersed throughout.

Great book on fractals and imaging

This old book is a timeless gem. It goes into the details of the mathematics of fractals and also shows well-commented C code for producing fractal imagery along with good color illustrations.
Chapter 1, "Fractals in Nature", uses computer generated images to build a visual intuition for fractal as opposed to Euclidian shapes. There is also a mathematical characterization with Brownian motion as the prototype.
In chapter 2, "Random Fractal Algorithms", randomness is introduced into the algorithms discussed in chapter one as a way of simulating natural phenomena. Ideas are extended to higher dimensions. C programs that produce mountain ranges using these ideas are presented, along with the resulting imagery.
Chapter 3, "Fractal Patterns Arising in Chaotic Dynamical Systems", turns to the topic of dynamical systems and is less mathematical than the first two chapters. There is some mathematics and some illustrations in 2D and black and white that should be familiar to any student of dynamical systems.
Chapter 4, "Fantastic Deterministic Fractals", demonstrates how genuine mathematical research experiments open a door to a new reservoir of fantastic shapes and images. Programs are shown that extend the ideas of chapter 3 into truly beautiful fractals. Ideas here stay mainly in 2D.
The final chapter, "Fractal Modelling of Real World Images", draws from the material of the previous chapters to present C programs that produce clouds, vegetation, smoke, and mountain ranges, all by altering a few of the parameters in the sample code presented by the authors.
This book is much better than more recent titles that bury their algorithms in complex high level languages or "toy books" on the subject that provide dumbed-down applications and in which the simplest possible explanation of fractals is given with no insight. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding fractal mathematics and in using that mathematics to produce stunning visual effects.

Unique resource for understanding this ecosystem

The authors' love of nature and years of experience clearly show in this unique field guide. Most books have an encyclopedic and repetitive approach. In contrast, this book looks at the individual plants and how they fit into the entire ecosystem ranging from companion plants, and dependent bird, mammal, and insect species. I have not seen another book that describes eastern wetlands in as much detail and yet still be highly readable.

Sweet!

This is a really great book. It explains way more then you would expect for a field guide. It goes in depth about each plant, animals that depend on them and other interesting tidbits that you wont find in any other guide. The awsome illustrations are done so beautifully and true to life no one should have any problems idtentifying plants on the trail. They also truly give this book a nice touch. It's like a book of old documenting new discoveries!

Just what I was looking for!

For those people who already kind of know their way around the forest, and are more interested in what they are going to see ASSOCIATED with the plants they see than what an Audobon book says, this is a naturalist's dream come true!
Great b/w illustrations of not only leaves and fruits, but insects, diseases, toothmarks, clawmarks and nests that can be found on and around the trees and plants listed in the book...
Also highly recommended is the Forest and Thicket book by the same authors...
